First Parallel Giant Slalom of the season in Soelden / Locals Fiegl and Gruener are straining at the leash to start

Also this year, Tyrol ski resort Soelden hosts an alpine event of the NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup 2005/2006. On October 15th and 16th, this winter’s first Parallel Giant Slalom takes place on the Rettenbach glacier. On Saturday, the ladies start. The day after, the men compete in the head to head duels.

Like last winter, the world’s best race boarders have applied to start in Austria including last season’s riders who entered the podium. Austrian Doresia Krings will try to repeat her last year’s triumph against Ursula Bruhin (SUI) and Julie Pomagalski from France who raced into the yellow bib of the current World Cup leader last weekend in the Netherlands. Also, 2005 Overall World Cup winner Daniela Meuli is allowed to aspire a top position as well as Isabelle Blanc (FRA), Amelie Kober from Germany and Michelle Gorgone (USA).

In the men’s competition, last year offered a Swiss podium which Olympic Champion Philipp Schoch, Gilles Jaquet and Urs Eiselin will try to repeat 364 days later. But this is something, which double Parallel World Champion Jasey Jay Anderson from Canada, Austrian Siegfried Grabner who triumphed in Landgraaf and French Mathieu Bozzetto and Nicolas Huet want to avoid.

However, two man are straining at the leash to race down the hill. Locals Dominik Fiegl and Lukas Gruener have high hopes for the Parallel Giant Slalom in their home town. The Austrian fans can be anxious to see if especially Lukas Gruener is able to keep his good form from South America where the 24 year old snowboarder captured Gold in the season’s second Snowboard Cross at Chilean Valle Nevado. Thus, he can hardly wait to compete in Soelden: “It’s more fun racing at home because my friends and my family will watch. Also, I like the hill even though I broke my right hand in last year’s contest. I’m just looking forward to competing there!”
