Freestylers kick off LG Snowboard FIS World Cup season "down under". Reigning Halfpipe World Champion confirmed to start in New Zealand. It’s showtime again! In just a few days the boarders can finally get back on their boards that mean the world as the 2008/2009 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup opens its season. Like last year, the freestyler will kick off the international competition series again with a halfpipe contest in Cardrona, New Zealand. On September 6th, men and ladies will battle in the qualifier heats for the right to start in the finals which will take place on September 7th in the new 22 feet superpipe which was built last off-season. For the first World Cup under the roof of the new title sponsor LG Electronics of Korea a high class starter field will enter the competition. The more than 70 male boarders from 19 nations are led by 2007 double World Champion (halfpipe and big air) Mathieu Crepel. The Frenchman will face last year’s winner in Cardrona Ryoh Aono (JPN) and 2008 season’s top halfpipe athlete from Switzerland Iouri Podladtchikov as well as 2006 Olympians Giacomo Kratter (ITA), Christophe Schmidt (GER) and Gary Zebrowski (FRA). In addition, Rolf Feldmann (SUI) and Norway’s squad consisting of Kim-Rune Hansen, Tore Holvik and Roger Kleivdal will check out the new halfpipe – just to name a few international top talents. Also, the sole World Cup “down under” will feature the first ever performance of a World Cup snowboarder from the Bahamas. After he changed nationality from the Canadian one to the one of the island state in the Northern Atlantic Korath Wright will try to tie up to his so far best World Cup season. In the 2005/2006 winter, “Kory” entered the podium at Whistler finishing third in his second ever World Cup start. On the ladies side, another illustrious field will enter the competition. Besides defending World Cup title holder and 2007 Halfpipe World Champion Manuela Laura Pesko (SUI) Kjersti Buaas (NOR) who won the Olympic Bronze medal in 2006 is among the top aspirants for victory. In addition, Holly Crawford (AUS) will celebrate a comeback after a contest absence of one year as well as Poland’s Paulina Ligocka who recovered from her last year’s injury. But there are other girls also ready to drop in: Lisa Wiik (NOR), France’s Anne-Sophie Pellissier and Sophie Rodriguez as well as Jiayu Liu (CHN) and Soko Yamaoka (JPN). The first halfpipe competition of the new season will be held in the format which was introduced last year. The three best ranked riders of each qualification heat will make it directly to the finals. The 4th to 9th placed of each qualifier have to fight for the last final spots in the semi finals where only the top 6 men and 3 ladies proceed. In the finals, twelve men and six ladies will compete in two runs. Six more halfpipe contest of the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup will follow the season’s opener in Cardrona. They will be hosted in Switzerland, Japan, Italy, Canada and Spain.
